Rapporteur Carlos Coelho: I feel safe in Romania; Romania has fulfilled all Schengen set conditions

Romania "has done a good job" and fulfilled all Schengen set conditions, as well as applied "the best practices" as regards certain chapters, stated on Friday the European Parliament Rapporteur for Romania and Bulgaria, Carlos Coelho.

"I benefit of a very strong support from MEPs from Romania. It is easy to be the Rapporteur for Romania, given that Romania has done a good job. All technical conditions have been met and the experts were unanimous in their assessment. Romania not only that fulfilled the old Schengen conditions, but there are certain chapters where it has applied the best practices. (...) A great merit should be attributed to the staff working in these areas and benefiting from an operational-level responsibility. I congratulate the Government of Romania", underlined the European Parliament Rapporteur. Carlos Coelho said, vis-a-vis the same Schengen issue: "When we talk about security, we do not only talk about equipment, but also about personnel. As far as Romania is concerned, I want to say I feel safe".

In relation to the visit of the MEP delegation headed by rapporteur Coelho, head of the Schengen Department of the Romanian Interior Ministry (MAI) Marian Tutilescu said the aim of the visit was to evaluate the latest developments in Romania's preparedness.

"The conclusions of the visit and the evaluation will be included in a report to be submitted to the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament, which will discuss the report, based on which the European Parliament will cast a vote," said Tutilescu.

He added that at a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs council on Thursday, the Hungarian Presidency of the European Council presented a statement indicating that Romania has finalised technical preparations for accession to the Schengen Area, while Bulgaria will be evaluated this March to see the finalisation of the technical preparations for its land borders.

"The Hungarian Presidency has once again voiced full readiness to get a favourable decision regarding the accession of the two countries while it is still in office. The interior ministers of Romania and Bulgaria reiterated in their speeches the need for the two countries to join together under the conditions set forth in 2007, once Bulgaria has finalised its technical preparations," said Tutilescu.
