Romania to continue to encourage annihilation of any extremist attitude and to promote tolerance, democracy

Romania will continue to encourage the annihilation of any extremist attitudes and to promote tolerance and democracy, President Klaus Iohannis stated in the message sent on the occasion of the plenary meeting of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

"I want to assure you that, although Romania will hand over the IHRA tenure, in March 2017, Romania's presidency in the Alliance represented only a stage, one in which we successfully took actions, a stage of our road for strengthening the education and research in regards to the Holocaust, as well as fighting any form of discrimination. The Romanian state will continue to encourage the annihilation of any extremist attitudes and to promote tolerance and democracy by any means at its disposal,' the head of state reveals in the message delivered on Wednesday by Presidential Adviser Andrei Muraru.

According to Iohannis, in the eight months since taking over the IHRA presidency, Romania proved that is consistent to the principles which it is promoting: tolerance and mobilization against extremism of any kind, in agreement with the democratic values that guide the Romanian state.

The head of state mentioned that Romania's commitments in taking over the presidency office of the IHRA, were based on three main coordinates: strengthening education about the Holocaust in member states of the Alliance and not only, academic research in the area, as well as promoting remembrance of the Holocaust in media and social media, in order to support mutual understanding and tolerance, stressing out that our country's goals wouldn't have became tangible and appreciated without a supported communication between the state's institutions.

"Romania's tenure to the IHRA, translated, at the same time through imprinting a new direction in terms of generalizing the awareness of the Holocaust phenomenon: courses were introduced for civil workers, on the Holocaust, fighting antisemitism, xenophobia and discrimination. Another important accomplishment is the decision to create in Bucharest a Museum of Jewish History and the Holocaust. Such a museum will bring back to the present an idea which I strongly believe in: humans can confront the future only with their past,' President Iohannis claimed, bringing to mind the words spoken by Elie Wiesel - 'To forget, to shut up, to be indifferent to everything around you - are one of the biggest sins.'

He brought to mind that one of the important accomplishments of the Romanian presidency within the Alliance was adopting, in the first meeting in Bucharest a coherent work definition for antisemitism.

"We must assume the past and avoid the trap of a selective memory,' President Iohannis stated.
