ForMin Melescanu deposits ratification instrument of Paris Agreement on Climate Change

Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu deposited the ratification instrument of the Paris Agreement on Climate Changes, in the presence of United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs Miguel de Serpa Soares, the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) informs in a release sent to AGERPRES on Friday. The Paris Agreement came into force on 5 October 2016 and will become operational after 2020.

According to the release, during the ceremony, the Romanian chief diplomat showed that the formulation and the coordinated implementing of the strategies on sustainable development and climate changes, on a national level, correspond to Romania's commitment as EU and UN member state, as well as to Romania's goal of actively contributing to implementing the Agreement mechanisms.

The UN high official underscored that Romania's ratifying the Paris Agreement on Climate Changes represents the acknowledgement of the important contribution of the country to keeping this area on the international agenda and consolidating the cooperation among world states in addressing this phenomenon.

At the same time, Minister Melescanu had a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed during which he underscored the importance of the commitments assumed by the states that adopted the 2030 Agenda, in respect to eradicating poverty and famine, combating inequalities and injustice, as well as adopting some active measures on the protection of the environment, in accordance with the three areas of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. He underscored that the national policy of cooperation for development represents the main instrument through which Romania, as European Union member state and official assistance for development donor, fulfills its commitments on sustainable development assumed on a foreign level, the MAE release points out.

In her turn, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed voiced appreciation for the deposit of the ratification instrument of the Paris Agreement on climate changes, as well as for the constant attention granted by Romania to implementing the 2030 Agenda on sustainable development.

"The international peace and security topics were approached by the Foreign Minister in separate meetings with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman and with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. They approached priority interest topics for Romania, namely strengthening the UN capacities in the area of peacekeeping missions, the cooperation between the UN and the regional organisations in ensuring international peace and security, as well as increasing the Security Council's profile as a forum of prevention and proactive action in solving crisis situations," the MAE release reads.

In context, according to MAE, the speakers hailed the interest shown by Romania in an active involvement in preventive diplomacy and mediation actions through the UN. Moreover, they appreciated Romania's role in ensuring regional stability and the consistent and varied contribution Romania has brought over time to UN's peacekeeping missions.

Furthermore, Minister Melescanu had a bilateral meeting with Miroslav Lajcak, in his new capacity of UN General Assembly president, with the two officials reiterating the need to promote an efficient multilateralism, with the acknowledgment of the UN's central role.

"The consolidation of these contacts and the initiation of a profound dialogue on a UN level by the Romanian Foreign Minister correspond to Romania's priority objective to increase the visibility of Romania's candidacy to the Security Council among the UN member states," MAE underscores.
