Romania should have a consolidated Brexit strategy

Romania should have a consolidated Brexit strategy, Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu said Tuesday as he was chairing a meeting of an interministerial working group in the area.

Attending the meeting hosted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) were secretaries of state from several ministries and Parliament, as well as presidential adviser on European Affairs Leonard Orban, according to a MAE press statement.

Victor Negrescu mentioned that Romania's objectives are focused on protecting the rights and interests of the Romanian citizens in the UK and safeguarding the European budget provisions concerning the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy under the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework, the statement reads.

"Our desire to increase transparency, generate a political consensus and involving as many players in drawing up Romania's positions on Brexit have generated very many constructive ideas. We have thus decided to work on a new strategy of Romania concerning Brexit, intensifying dialogue with Romanians living in the UK and developing commercial action with the organisations in charge and the business environment," Negrescu is quoted as saying in the statement.

Negrescu underscored that the working group intensified its activity after the initiation on 17 July of a new round of negotiations over the UK exiting the EU.

He highlighted that the Brexit negotiations are carried out "under the principle of cohesion and solidarity, which means the agreement will have to reflect the interests of all the 27 European Union member states."

"The rights of the Romanian citizens and their families must be the same as the rights extended to all European citizens," added Negrescu.
